Character Qualities Part 1

Mike Seay Filed Under:
Im reading through a  book titled "The Heart of an Artist", written by  a great worship director out of willow creek community church, Rory Noland. In the book he goes through scenarios that are bound to happen to just about anyone who is in church ministry. Its the perfect book to run through with a worship team, or anyone in the arts department of churches any where. The scenarios he gives on not for the benefit of just one style of church, and i think thats what's really awesome about the book. e gives a scenario, and then puts it in a question at the end so you Nd your team can work through what you would do, or what would work at your church. In this book i've found things where i said, oh yeah, i remember going through that, or, i wish i would have thought how of that way to handle that situation, and then there's thing that haven't happened and i know its something ill deal with in the future. i really didn't mean to pitch this book as much as i did, i wrote this blog to give some wisdom i've gotten from it, but i would defiantly encourage anyone who wants to grow with your worship team or just grow as a worship artist or pastor to read this book.

Proven Character pt. 1

"Be more concerned with your character than your reputation, because your character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what others think you are."

Living authentic lives as followers of Christ.

I believe this should be the first thing on anyones list as a person claiming they know and have a relationship with Jesus and especially if you are a person in a leadership role (church leadership in 1 Tim 3 and Titus 1). We should be models in "[our] speech, life, love, faith, and purity"(Tim. 4:12) The reality of having a character that backs up the things that you say and do cannot be stressed enough. its the most important thing because its the thing that compels you to do whatever it is you do. i enjoyed one of the points Rory talked about in the book that said this, "its okay to be introverted but its not ok to be self-absorbed. its okay to be in touch with your feelings, but is not okay to be controlled by them all the time. Its okay to be sensitive, but its not okay to be overly sensitive or chronically defensive. Its okay to do things with excellence, but is not okay to be overly perfectionistic."
What good insight, and truth. Hope this helped you some what, if only to take a step back and acknowledge the weight that your character hold in your life. I issue a challenge to you to really evaluate yourself and see where your character is struggling and also ask your close friends what they notice about your character. It may not be the most comfortable thing but i assure you it will be beneficial.  As Rory says in his book, Any growth we experience in character will be an asset to anything we do.
